Four Hikes Near American Muscle Oakville

Hiking is a great cardio tool!

4 Hikes You’ve Gotta Check Out Near American Muscle Gym in St. Louis

If you're like me and hit up American Muscle on the regular, you know how good it feels to get in a solid workout. But sometimes, especially on the weekends or after a heavy lift day, I like to change things up and get outside. Luckily, St. Louis has some awesome spots nearby where you can stretch your legs, get some fresh air, and still keep that active vibe going, especially if you’ve got a pup who’s itching to get moving too.

Here are four of my go-to hikes, all within a short drive from the gym, whether you’re looking to burn some extra calories, recover from a tough session, or just swap barbells for birdsongs for a bit.

1. Castlewood State Park – For That Post-Leg-Day Burn

Castlewood is hands-down one of the best places to get some real movement in nature. It's only about 25 minutes from the gym in Ballwin, and it’s got the kind of trails that'll make your glutes feel leg day all over again. I usually hit the River Scene Trail, it's about 3.25 miles and gives you those awesome bluff views of the Meramec River. You climb some decent elevation, but then you’re rewarded with a peaceful stretch along the water.

There’s also the Grotpeter Trail (around 5 miles) if you're looking for more of a cardio push, and the Chubb Trail (up to 6.5 miles) if you're down for a longer haul, that one even links up with other parks and has some killer prairie scenery.

Pro tip: Bring water and go early to beat the heat. Dogs are welcome on-leash, and mine absolutely loves the riverside sections.

2. Bee Tree Park – Chill Vibes with River Views

Bee Tree Park in Oakville is a bit more low-key, but still totally worth it. It’s about 5 minutes from American Muscle, and it’s perfect for a recovery day when you just want a peaceful walk. The Bee Tree Lake Loop is short and easy, with a nice view of the lake the whole way around. There’s also the Paw Paw Trail and the Mississippi Trail, which gives you those awesome overlooks of the river. The latter has a little elevation, too, if you’re looking for a bit more effort.

I like coming here when I want to get outside without pushing too hard, like after a big push/pull day at the gym. It’s usually quiet, super dog-friendly, and the scenery is really relaxing.

3. Laumeier Sculpture Park – For Something a Little Different

This one’s just cool. Laumeier Sculpture Park in Sunset Hills isn’t your typical hike — it’s like a nature walk meets outdoor art gallery. You’ll see giant sculptures scattered through the woods and fields, and it’s a fun way to move your body and engage your brain at the same time. The Art Hike Trail takes you off the paved paths into a more wooded area if you want something a little more “trail-like.”

I usually recommend this one to friends who are new to hiking or just want something casual. It’s less about the sweat, more about the experience. Still, it's a great walk to get your steps in after a long gym session, and dogs are allowed on-leash, so it’s a fun outing for both of you.

4. Cliff Cave Park – Underrated Gem with Awesome Variety

If you haven’t checked out Cliff Cave Park in South County yet, it’s time. It’s about 25 minutes from the gym and offers a great mix of flat, paved trails and more rugged dirt paths through the woods and along the bluffs. You can take it easy on the lower loop near the river or challenge yourself a bit on the upper trails that wind through forested hillsides with great views of the Mississippi.

It’s a solid spot whether you're recovering or ready to push a little harder. Bonus: the park is super dog-friendly with lots of room for sniffing and exploring. Just bring a leash, and you’ve got yourself a scenic, active adventure your pup will love.

Final Thoughts
Whether you’re chasing elevation, soaking up some quiet nature, or just giving your dog a new place to explore, these spots near American Muscle Gym make it easy to stay active outside the gym. Switch up your routine, get some steps in, and breathe a little deeper — your body (and your four-legged workout buddy) will thank you.
